General Meeting 2008 (I)

Well, this event took place quite a while before, hopefully it's not too late for the article about it to come out... hehe..

After a long break of holidays, here we are again!!

For your acknowledgement, the first general meeting in 2008 was held on 15th March successfully. First of all, as the organizing chairman of the general meeting, I would like to thank all of the involved members for the participation. I must admit that I was surprised by the number of attendees which had exceeded my expectations!

Basically, this general meeting aimed to recruit new members, to inform members about the upcoming activities and projects and to create interactions among members. Here, I would like to apologize for the flaws. Due to some technical problems, the meeting was delayed for around 15 minutes. Later, this event was kicked off by President, GT’s welcoming speech. He emphasized that members should take part in activities enthusiastically to gain benefits and experience. After that, we were briefed about the financial report, upcoming activities and projects and of course, G&S (Graduate & Student) IEM.

Then, we came to the breathtaking part – election. A great applause should be given to all of the candidates for the courage to come upon and the passionate to contribute. As the positions were limited, only 10 could be chosen. For those who did not make it, do not be disappointed. There are other ways to contribute to the club like by giving a lot of good ideas and joining our activities enthusiastically.

Followed by was the brainstorming section. Every group was given a packet of straws to build a tower without any other assisting material. There were 5 groups: DAP, BN, Juice, Parti Keadilan and Anyname. Hmm.. I never knew that the politics had influenced our peaceful campus life so much. In overall, all the groups had done a great job. Various kinds of towers had been produced. Most importantly, from this small competition, I found that most of the groups managed to pull themselves together and work as a team. Especially when it was time to put coins onto the tower, every member of the group would hold their breath and together GASP when the tower fell. After a fair discernment, BN had won the victory (just coincidence to the reality>.<)!! Anyway congrats! Their tower was really cool as it was alike to the Taipei 101.

Finally, it was the refreshment time! Plates of popiah and karipap were served. Yummy yummy…

In overall, I am glad that we had achieved the main goals of this general meeting, especially the team building and innovation thinking part; the seniors and juniors cooperated together, exchanging their technical knowledge. Lastly, hope you guys had enjoyed in the general meeting!

CUTEC Beach Outing Sem 2 2007 Cont.

First of all, I would like to wish you all a Prosperous and Happy Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai! As you all know, a fellowship barbeque was held by CUTEC at Taman Selera a.k.a Tanjung beach on 20th of October 2007. Around 50 participants had successfully attracted to attend. The event was aimed to foster the relationships between the committee members, ordinary members and club advisors. At the same time, our club advisors, Mr. Cheng Chin Fook and Mr. Terence Tan contributed great efforts in promoting interesting projects to all the members. The event was officially started around 3p.m. and the first program was a talk delivered by both of the club advisors. The inspiration talk was mainly about the projects that are going to be initiated on next semester. Those projects including Go-cart project, River Power Generator and Mini Flyer. After the brief project descriptions session, everyone was divided into three groups based on the project that had interested the members. During the session, some movies regarding to the project were showed to the members and they were given the opportunity to ask any question regarding towards the project. When the time reaches 3.30p.m., there was a fun session for all the members. The members were encouraged to split into 5 groups. As all of them are future engineers, they were given an engineering related task, which was to build a sand tower with highest height-to-base ratio among all the groups. By observing the pictures uploaded below, you will notice that they really enjoyed the competition. After the game, barbeque was finally started. CUTEC members have the privilege to enjoy all the food for free. While they were enjoying their food, the committee members and members were mingling around. The whole program ended around 6p.m. In short, this event was conducted smoothly and the outcome was very satisfactory for all the committee members who had put a lot of hard works into the event. In line with the theme of this event, “Scunk Work”, that brings the meanings of a group of people who work together to achieve the same goal, therefore the game was designed in such a way that members were required to collaborate in their teams to build a sand tower.

CUTEC AutoCAD Workshop Sem 2 2007

Sorry for the long delay, but somehow everyone is occupied by something during the exam weeks and occupied by something more during the holidays. (^ ^)

First, Curtin University of Technology Engineering Club (CUTEC) wants to wish its members and readers “Happy New Year 2008”. Hope this year will be a great year and brings more prosperity and wisdom.
Year 2007 was a productive year for CUTEC. We organized several interesting activities including the Beach Outing, Miri Airport Technical visit, Welding workshop and many more. In September 29, 2007, CUTEC also organized an AutoCAD workshop. The objective for this workshop was to expose the participants on the design software, AutoCAD.
The speaker for the workshop was Mr Cheng Chin Fook, a lecturer. He shared his knowledge with 25 participants that consist of different courses. They learnt the fundamental of engineering design in both 2D and 3D. Before that, they have to understand the interfaces, buttons and its functions. Later on, they did a basic tutorial, which they made a design based on the coffee cup or mug they brought for the workshop. The workshop took around four to five hours.
Overall, this workshop went well despite the limited resources faced by CUTEC and Curtin Sarawak as well. The venue of the workshop, ME building, experienced power problem at that time and we postponed the workshop several times until we confirmed the exact date, September 29, 2007.
To Mr Cheng Chin Fook, it was a great opportunity to work with you. As for the participants, I appreciate for the positive comments and feedbacks I received on that day. Finally yet importantly, the CUTEC committee members who always supported and helping me through out the processes of running this workshop.

Miri Airport Technical Site Visit Sem 2 2007

Well well well, as the Organizing Chairperson of Miri Airport Technical Visit, I was being told to write an article describing more on the event. On 14th September 2007 at 1:15pm, 30 participants including committee members were on their way heading to Miri Airport. Upon arrival, a briefing was given to all the participants by the authorities as well as a few presentations about their vision, mission statement, flight routes to/from Miri, background of Miri and the management team. Later by that, a tour was conducted to all the participants. The tour allows participants to be able to visit the authorized rooms or departments in the main terminal building such as the Airport Server Room, PABX/PA/FIDS Room, Fire Control Room, Baggage claim as well as the runway. Then, the tour is continued to Chiller Service Room which is built far away from the main terminal used mainly to control the air-conditioning system for the terminal building. Next, the tour is then continuing to the Technical Room where the participants were able to know the runway & taxiway lighting is controlled. The most interesting part of the event was the visit to Layang- Layang Aerospace Sdn Bhd helibase. This hangar is mainly used for private airjets as well as helicopters. Participants were able to shoot many photos with the helicopters as well as certain small size airplanes.

As the Organizing Chairperson of this event, I am highly being proud to express billion thanks to all the committee members in helping up to get this event to be successful ones as well as the enthusiastic participants. Hope this event will leave you a memorable trip. I am here to apologize to those unfortunate students who are interested to join this event and could not make it due to a large number of participation and limited seats. To ensure everyone has the chance to go again, we as the committee members may organize once again in the coming semester. So see you again next time. Have a nice day!~
