"Engineers, Are You Industry-Ready?" Seminar

Dear fellow members,

Does the word resume chill you up from head-to-toe?
Panicked at the idea of facing those job interviews in the future?

We are pleased to invite Mr. Terence Tan, our lecturer to talk about “Tips on Interview & Resume Writing” to get you prepared when facing such situations.

"Which major is more suitable for me?"
"Am I on the right path?"

We have also invited speakers from IEM (Institute Engineers Malaysia), each in different major (Chemical, Civil, Electrical & Mechanical) to give a career talk. They will be sharing their working experiences and give us some advices.

Foundation and First Year students will find this seminar an eye-opening opportunity. By joining this seminar, we hope your uncertainty will slightly be reduced. This may well be a great chance for you to start deciding your major.

As for Second, Third and Final year students, you may join us in the talk if you wishs to.

Getting to know the engineers and the jobs they do will enlighten us with a sneak peek into their daily life. It will be most interesting to know more of the practicality of the theories we've learned. Do join us!

It’s FREE for all members, and only RM5 for non-members. Refreshment is provided as well.

For members only, you may register by downloading this form and fill the form before sending it to curtin.cutec@gmail.com or you may register at the booth.

For non-members who are interested, we will open a booth for you to register from 22nd – 24th, 11am – 1pm at the cafeteria.

Shin Yang Technical Site Visit (2008)

It's another traditional site visit organized by CUTEC!

Today, our club went visiting to Shin Yang Shipyard, located somewhere close to Kuala Baram district.

and we had a whooping 32 participants joining this site visit!

Upon arriving at the shipyard, we are warmly welcomed and we received a briefing session of the shipyard and details and safety precautions of our site visit, presented by Mr. Ting, the general manager of the shipyard.

After about half an hour of briefing, we are then divided into four groups with each group was tour guided by two engineers.

Moving on, we were first brought to visit the cutting machine.

This machine uses the hydraulic pressure to cut through steels and metals.

We were then brought to see the pipe bending machine, where one of the engineers demonstrated how the machine actually works.

This machine has the ability to bend pipes easily without breaking it, imagine how powerful it is to be able to do that!

Next, we were brought to view places where ships are being built.

The ships are HUGE!

Look at those engineers working on the ship, they actually weld the body, pieces by pieces like puzzles, and create such enormous giant in the end!

That must have taken a lot of work to complete the whole ship

And yes! We actually boarded onto a ship!

We visited all the way up the top..

..then into the control room (nice eh?)

Wa look at those knobs and switches, better keep your hands in your pockets!

..and down under into the engine room.

The engines are generating noisy "sweet lullabies"

All in all, this site visit is very interesting and meaningful!

sweet

We sure have learned and seen a lot of things that we would not have the chance to see, and so this group photo wrapped up the event for today. Overall everything went smoothly, except the grouping at the end of the briefing session, which was quite confusing at first, and it would have been better if I had planned for this earlier. A big "thank you" I must say to the commitee members who have helped me for this event.

~The End~

CUTEC’s 1st General Meeting of 2nd Sem 2008
Date : 9/8/2008
Time : 10-12.30
Venue : G3 105

It’s the start of a new sem! though it’s already a few weeks since class resumed..

Anyway CUTEC held its first general meeting of Semester .

About 30 participants were present, where some had just registered on the day itself.

The day’s event started off with introduction of the committee members.

Those're the committee members intro-ing themselves

It was then followed by the club's president, Ms Lim Yii Mei for her welcoming speech.

Basically, Yii Mei talked about some brief information regarding the Club.

Yii Mei says : "Yo!" ^^

After the welcoming speech from Yii Mei, Ms Tina, one representative explained the roles and benefit of joining IEM(Institute of Engineers Malaysia).
Ways to join IEM were also informed to all present on that day.

Next up was CUTEC Club's Treasurer, Mr Noorasfan, or Asfan as we usually call him =P, who talked about the club's treasurer report.
Asfan showed us the club's incomes and expenses from the previous semester.

Then it was Ms Ling Su Ning, the club's activity director to describe the club's activities. Su Ning explained previous activities organised by CUTEC, as well as upcoming ones. So for those who are anticipating more events from the club, do keep yourself updated!

Su Ning explaining past activities

It was then Mr Sim Sheng Kai, the project director, to talk about the club's project, previous and upcoming ones. Just some small info here, our club had completed the trebuchet project. And if anyone has any new project in mind, do speak your thought out!

After the project presentation, there was a brief talk by Ms Catherine, who is a CUTEC member herself, about the JCLA(John Curtin Leadership Academy)'s RM 1 Campaign.

Miss Catherine during her talk

As a sign of appreciation and recognition of previous board of committee members and EXCO, CUTEC awarded the previous EXCOs and committee members with the certificate if appreciation. Well deserved by them as they worked very hard to keep the club going ever forward (:
And oh, the cert was presented by ex-president, Mr Chiew Guan Thai or GT.

So after all were done, it was time for some fun! Which was the game session. The game played was the bridge game, where we had to build a bridge using only newpapers and limited staples. So yeah, design was what made the difference ^^
Below are pictures during game session, too bad didn't manage to take some snap of the bridges.
Enough motivation to winning? =P

Refreshment wahaha
Haha so the light refreshment wrapped up the General Meeting. Overall it went pretty smoothly without any major problem. But one disappointing thing was not all members stayed till the end of the meeting. It would be great for everyone to have fun together (:
And also big thanks to all committee members who had contributed. Greatly appreaciated^^
So this post has come to an end.
More activities to come!

CUTEC BBQ Fellowship Gathering Sem 1 2008

*Phew, here's the last event we had for the first semester, and that should complete our account for this sem... hehe. So here it is.. (^-^)*

Hi guys! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays! :) As you all know, CUTEC fellowship gathering had been held at Taman Awam Miri on 10th May 2008. Around 50 participants had successfully attracted to attend. The objectives of this event are to enhance the relationship between the committee members and ordinary members. Furthermore, it aimed to build up team spirit of CUTEC. Each committee member contributed tremendous effort in promoting this fellowship gathering to all the members.

On that day, all committee members reached at Taman Awam around 5pm and helped out in the preparation by setting up the food, music and barbecue equipment. As I had to attend another event during that time, Su Fong was elected as temporary OC during the event. The barbecue fire was started by the Teh and the others who reached there first. On the other hand, Danny helped out in preparing the drinks.

Around 6pm, the barbecue was officially started. All CUTEC members have the opportunity to enjoy all the food for free, including chicken wings, pizzas, sausages, fried mee and bee hoon. While enjoying the food, everyone chit chatted around and mixed with each other.

Then, when I reached there around 8pm, the game was started. All the committee members of the event helped out in distributing and pasting a paper on each member’s back, allowing others to write some comments and autographs on the paper. Everyone enjoyed and knew each other more through the game. Around 10pm, all the members were allowed to take off the papers and have a look themselves about the comments written by others. Everyone seemed to enjoy because some smiled and even laughed after looking at the comments.

After that, the event was officially ended. Some members went back home by their own transport while some was sent back by our committees. Everyone co-operated well in cleaning up the place.

In short, this event was conducted smoothly and the result was satisfying as all committee contributed a lot in making it a success. Hence, I would like to express my gratitude to all CUTEC committees in making this gathering a great success. Through this gathering, the relationship between members and committees were fostered and everyone got to know each other better. As a result, this outcome assists a lot in organizing CUTEC up-coming activities.
