"Engineers, Are You Industry-Ready?" Seminar

Dear fellow members,

Does the word resume chill you up from head-to-toe?
Panicked at the idea of facing those job interviews in the future?

We are pleased to invite Mr. Terence Tan, our lecturer to talk about “Tips on Interview & Resume Writing” to get you prepared when facing such situations.

"Which major is more suitable for me?"
"Am I on the right path?"

We have also invited speakers from IEM (Institute Engineers Malaysia), each in different major (Chemical, Civil, Electrical & Mechanical) to give a career talk. They will be sharing their working experiences and give us some advices.

Foundation and First Year students will find this seminar an eye-opening opportunity. By joining this seminar, we hope your uncertainty will slightly be reduced. This may well be a great chance for you to start deciding your major.

As for Second, Third and Final year students, you may join us in the talk if you wishs to.

Getting to know the engineers and the jobs they do will enlighten us with a sneak peek into their daily life. It will be most interesting to know more of the practicality of the theories we've learned. Do join us!

It’s FREE for all members, and only RM5 for non-members. Refreshment is provided as well.

For members only, you may register by downloading this form and fill the form before sending it to curtin.cutec@gmail.com or you may register at the booth.

For non-members who are interested, we will open a booth for you to register from 22nd – 24th, 11am – 1pm at the cafeteria.

Shin Yang Technical Site Visit (2008)

It's another traditional site visit organized by CUTEC!

Today, our club went visiting to Shin Yang Shipyard, located somewhere close to Kuala Baram district.

and we had a whooping 32 participants joining this site visit!

Upon arriving at the shipyard, we are warmly welcomed and we received a briefing session of the shipyard and details and safety precautions of our site visit, presented by Mr. Ting, the general manager of the shipyard.

After about half an hour of briefing, we are then divided into four groups with each group was tour guided by two engineers.

Moving on, we were first brought to visit the cutting machine.

This machine uses the hydraulic pressure to cut through steels and metals.

We were then brought to see the pipe bending machine, where one of the engineers demonstrated how the machine actually works.

This machine has the ability to bend pipes easily without breaking it, imagine how powerful it is to be able to do that!

Next, we were brought to view places where ships are being built.

The ships are HUGE!

Look at those engineers working on the ship, they actually weld the body, pieces by pieces like puzzles, and create such enormous giant in the end!

That must have taken a lot of work to complete the whole ship

And yes! We actually boarded onto a ship!

We visited all the way up the top..

..then into the control room (nice eh?)

Wa look at those knobs and switches, better keep your hands in your pockets!

..and down under into the engine room.

The engines are generating noisy "sweet lullabies"

All in all, this site visit is very interesting and meaningful!

sweet

We sure have learned and seen a lot of things that we would not have the chance to see, and so this group photo wrapped up the event for today. Overall everything went smoothly, except the grouping at the end of the briefing session, which was quite confusing at first, and it would have been better if I had planned for this earlier. A big "thank you" I must say to the commitee members who have helped me for this event.

~The End~

Upcoming Activities

A new semester, and once again, CUTEC will be organising various activities, in hopes that you will participate and benefit from them! In this update, we will let you have a look to what will be expected in the nearest time!

Career Talk Seminar (completed)
Project Conference (completed)

Fellowship Gathering (completed)

Career Talk Seminar

Do you know what you may be in 5-10 years time? Are you holding a career in hand by then? Or are you unable to foresee where you'll be standing in the near future?
CUTEC invites you to join in the CAREER TALK SEMINAR, where experienced engineers from several dicisplines will share their stories.

This seminar will definitely be worthwhile, especially for freshmen who are in doubt of which courses they should take. You will have a clearer perspective on courses such as mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil and etc. Moreover, this seminar might just spark off your interest in any of the courses and further motivate you to pursue that prospective path!

Project Conference

Have you any stimulating great ideas that are constantly nagging the back of your minds? This is your golden opportunity, grab this chance, propose your engineering-related idea as a project, and if it goes through, CUTEC will help you with it! For those who are interested, you can start with joining us in the PROJECT CONFERENCE, to be held on 13th September 2008!

Learn the guidelines, experience how a professional engineer propose their ideas, and you are most welcome to propose new projects. If you'd like to have a look at the proposal form, you may retrieve it from the CUTEC Club Folder in Curtin's desktop.

For more information regarding this, you may contact our project director, Sim Sheng Kai (013-5615773).

Site Visits

Remember previous semester's site visit to Bintulu's SMDS (Shell Middle Distillate System) & Bakun Dam? If you missed that chance or if Bintulu is too far for you, then do make sure to join us this time around!

This semester, we will be visiting local places in Miri such as the SHIN YANG SHIPYARD SDN. BHD. and SESCO!

As for now, we have confirmed the visit to SHIN YANG SHIPYARD SDN. BHD, which is assumed to take place on 20th September. We will be guided through some ship-constructing processes and we might even have a sneak peek on the insides of the ships as well. However, our seats are limited, as usual. We suggest that you register right after the booth is open! We hope you will not miss out this opportunity yet again.

As for the SESCO site visit, we will reconfirm, and if we are granted permission, we will bring you into the building of Miri's main electric supplier!

Fellowship Gathering

Last but not least, we will be having a FELLOWSHIP GATHERING! After a long semester, we've planned hard, thought hard, worked hard for the purpose of giving benefits to all CUTEC members. Isn't it time for fun too?

On this occasion, we will have food, interactions and games! We will inform everyone as soon as we confirm the venue and the date. Stay with us and be sure to join us there!Do look forward for these activities and please do join!
